This BBC Nature website feature was taken from a article which originally appeared in BBC Wildlife magazine. The Harrises describe how, when they moved into their current house in 1995, only 5km from Bristol city centre, they immediately recognised the wildlife potential of the 53 by 13 metre garden thanks to its well established shrubs and the proximity of open spaces, mature woodland and other well established gardens.
They only had to provide additional feeding, particularly during the winter, to attract more birds and animals into the garden. Later, by using more overt wildlife gardening techniques, they enriched the habitats in the garden, e.g. by creating a wildlife pond and marsh area. Foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, 57 different garden birds and, of course, thousands of species of invertebrates use this city garden: a powerful testament to the value of gardens to wildlife.
